My Happy Place… Maui
Aloha! As soon as I land in Hawaii the Aloha spirit takes over my mind and body. I automatically feel relaxed and ready to unwind in this little slice of paradise. I grew up in the Midwest and did not spend my childhood traveling and never imagined I would ever get to experience the Hawaiian Islands. I had some friends that were lucky enough to go there on family vacations, but sadly my family was not the traveling family. Once I moved out west to San Francisco, I knew within the first few months that I was going to go explore the Hawaiian Islands.
First up, Maui. It seemed like a very fitting island for adventure, sandy beaches, and high-end accommodations. I headed there with my roommate. From the airport we headed to Paia for a bite at Maui Fish Market, we then moved onto Twin Falls via Road to Hana. Since we had limited time on the island, we didn’t get to explore the full Road to Hana. After a short hike up the falls we made our way to the Grand Wailea, where we would be staying. The sunsets on the beach were superb with colors of pink and purple. We decided on DUO for dinner. It's located within the Four Seasons and has been voted best steakhouse on Maui. However, being on the island, I ordered the fresh caught mahi mahi. The fish in general on the Hawaiian Islands is some of the best I have ever had.
The next day we decided to take a hike south of Wailea along Kings Highway. We hiked on top of lava rock formations where we saw wild baby goats then down to the tide pools crabs, starfish and and array of other sea life. After the hike we were ready to dip into the ocean. Nearby lies a huge public beach, Makena or“Big Beach” and located next to that is a clothing optional beach, "Little Beach." When in Maui, right? You bet we headed to Little Beach and played the part. The next free day we laid out poolside to soak in some rays.
Since this first trip to Maui, I met my boyfriend Stephen. His sister and brother-in-law own a condo in Kaanapali. From our first date we talked about going to Maui together and looked at dates and within the first few weeks of knowing one another, booked a flight to Maui. Since our first trip to Maui together, we have been back a handful of times. Each time we go, we do one touristy thing. But mostly, we chill out, he goes to Jiu Jitsu and I go to The Block for a good ass kicker, we catch the sunset with cocktails at Merriman’s, eat at the food trucks off Lower Honoapiilani Road, grab take out poke from Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquor to have at the condo for lunch, stand up paddle board a few mornings to black rock in hopes to see some sea turtles, and relax poolside with a chi chi from The Castaway.
Have you been to Hawaii? If so, what island and what did you enjoy while visiting the Aloha state?
